There are conflicting views as to what is or is not true, what you should or should not do and how you should or should not do it.

Basically the latest research does not support all of the information that many fitness 'gurus' have been handing down for years. So what does the latest research say? I'm glad you asked!

1. Stretching is goal specific. Meaning the way you'll stretch as part of your cardiovascular or resistance routine will not be the same as the way you'll stretch for improving your range of motion.

2. Stretching after exercise does not prevent post-exercise muscle soreness. There is also little or no support for the theory that stretching immediately before exercise can prevent either overuse or acute sports injuries.

3. Dynamic or Ballistic Stretching is heading the way of the dinosaur. The forceful, jerky movements have been known to cause micro tears in the muscle fibers. Bouncing and pulling your muscles with force is one way way ticket to soreness, injury and joint pain.

4. Static stretching is one of the safest ways to stretch. After a proper warm-up, assume a maximum stretch position for each muscle and hold for 30 seconds. Shorter durations do not produce desired results and longer durations do not significantly increase benefits.

5. PNF Stretching is a technique which involves a combination of alternating static stretches with isometric muscle contracting. It was first used by physical therapists for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is considered the fastest way to improve range of motion.

6. Visualize while stretching each muscle group. You've got to be 'plugged in' mentally to get the best result. Take this quiet stretch time to improve your body awareness. Focus on what you're doing. Even in a recession, I do not think you're too poor to pay attention. …

Business Relationship Building – Handling "Sticky" Situations with Clients and Peers http://blank-cd-r-business-card.com/business-relationship-building-handling-sticky-situations-with-clients-and-peers.html Wed, 25 Jul 2018 03:39:12 +0000 http://blank-cd-r-business-card.com/?p=4785 Recently a friend of mine, who is also a member of an active discussion group to which I belong, asked us all for advice. He had a contract for a three-week school program for which he planned to take off time from his regular employment. What he hadn’t known at the time the three-week commitment was made was that he would be receiving a promotion in the company of his regular employ that would not only mean a better income for him and his family, but also many more hours of work and no chance of being able to take off three weeks.

He felt terrible and guilty, but knew that he would have to “face the music” so to speak. He found a fine substitute for his program and then contacted the teacher with whom he had made his initial contract and was dismayed by her reaction to his dilemma. As you might imagine, this well meaning man stirred up a variety of feelings among the discussion group members.

The numerous interchanges made me consider what went wrong and what might have been a more workable solution. But, most of all, it reinforced the importance of realizing that there are three sides to every situation – my side, your side, and the real side, somewhere in the middle. Following are some of my thoughts and opinions on ways to handle sticky situations with clients – and all others, for that matter.

Start by dealing with your emotions. When the teacher was informed of the change, it appears that she overreacted and sent my friend an e-mail accusing him of “non-professional” behavior. This is when he overreacted and told us all the story, including references to “sleepless nights” his “22 days and nights” working away from his family due to the extra work of the new position. Now, I am not passing any judgment because I only heard one side of the story.

Many others in our group, however, reacted – because they respect and know my friend well – with a number of critical remarks about the unreasonable and “hardened” teacher. Then a couple of group members tried to look at the whole situation from the teacher’s point of view, and everyone became even more emotional. It is so natural for us to let feelings – especially if we have a passion for what we do – take over. This whole scenario caused angry words among the members of our usually congenial group. And, it most certainly didn’t solve anyone’s problems.

Many in our group condemned the teacher and suggested that my friend talk to the principal. Personally, I felt that this might worsen what was already a far from perfect solution. I guess that I might have apologized profusely to the teacher in question – even in person – and admitted that I was the one in the wrong.

I realize that we all have our side of the story. Yet, if we take time to put ourselves …

Why does this happen? The most common cause is a build up of extra processes and software running in the background that consume all of your system resources, leaving very little free for programs that you want to use. Of course there are other reasons behind a computer running slow so let’s take a look at them and what you can do to speed it back up again.

System Resources – These are typically defined by your memory and processor. The available system resources are used when you load up a program. If the amount of available resources is low then this is when you will notice slow response times and even system crashes. If this happens you are going to need to free some up. Firstly go to add and remove programs and delete any old ones that you no longer use, a lot of the time programs will auto-load when Windows starts up and therefore consume system resources. If you never use the program then this is a waste.

A very handy tool is the task manager. If you right click in your windows taskbar and choose task manager you can use the processes and performance tabs to keep an eye on how much memory and CPU usage your system is using. By using the processes tab you can identify which programs are using the most system resources and consider removing or disabling them if you don’t use them.

Finally a great way of freeing up valuable resources is by using the msconfig tool (you can type msconfig in the search or run box in windows to load it). The startup tab will show you what programs will load when Windows starts up, you will usually be able to identity which ones are needed and which aren’t, disable the ones you don’t use. After doing this you should notice a definite increase in available resources when you next restart your computer.

Hard Drive Maintenance – Your hard drive is where all your data is stored so ensuring that it is running properly is key to fast loading data. Slow response times on your hard drive are a very common cause for slow loading programs and files. To ensure this doesn’t happen you should regularly perform a clean up on your drive. This means going through your files and removing old files and folders you no longer use. Also try to do a disk cleanup to remove old temporary files. Depending on how much usage your hard drive gets, a disk defragment can make a big difference in drive response times, so try to run one of these every few weeks.

Spyware and malware checks – Spyware, malware and adware can not only put your data and privacy at risk but …

How Fear Inhibits Self-Expression and Personal Growth http://blank-cd-r-business-card.com/how-fear-inhibits-self-expression-and-personal-growth.html Mon, 09 Apr 2018 04:38:24 +0000 http://blank-cd-r-business-card.com/?p=4337 “The thing I fear most is fear,” said De Montaigne.

This sentiment is echoed by other great writers.

“Nothing is terrible except fear itself,” said Francis Bacon.

“The only thing I am afraid of is fear,” said the Duke of Wellington.

“Nothing is so much to be feared as fear,” said Henry David Thoreau

Fear is the ultimate limiting emotion. It overthrows reason. It paralyzes action.

In very rare times, in an emergency, fear may help us to act to save ourselves or someone else, but for the most part, it ruins all initiative, growth, and spontaneous right action.

Shakespeare commented that “Of all base passions, fear is the most accursed.”

The number one fear most people have is of public speaking. Yet, this fear has no survival value at all. The worst that can happen is that you are not articulate and people disapprove of your ideas or your way of delivering them.

Fear is simply the nauseating sensation in your abdominal area that over-rides any good sense you might have about anything. If allowed to persist, the surge of adrenaline causes your body to break down at a cellular level. We call it stress, but that is only the name we give for a body that is taut with fear.

Yet when you examine the cause of any fear, it is usually nothing more than a highly-charged negative opinion.

Unfortunately, it is in those areas that we must grow that we feel the most fear. In fact, beyond the boundary of your fear is your next greatest opportunity.

The result of this fear is that we stay trapped in limiting realities–poor paying jobs that barely allow us to survive, relationships that whittle our self-esteem to mush, educational opportunities that could expand our perception and massively improve our lives.

The most ironic thing is that those who push themselves to deal with their fear–find nothing there.

Someone, for example, who is afraid to speak up will find when he or she does that nobody is shocked, appalled, or indignant. In fact, things seem to improve because of it.

Fear left unchecked can lead to all kinds of neurosis and inhibitions. An extreme fear, which has no basis in reality, leads to paranoia.

The whole thing about fear is that unless your life is being threatened, it makes things far worse than they need to be.

The aggressions of governments, the escalation of nuclear armaments, express individual fears magnified a thousand-fold.

And the reaction to fear is so extreme that something is actually created to fear.

On an individual level, fear is partially or completely debilitating. It is the misuse of the imagination to create horrible scenarios. As Michael Pritchard once said, “Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed.”

Understanding that fear is a False Estimation About Reality is one step toward eliminating it. The final step is to do the thing that you fear, either all at once or through baby steps, and discovering that the monster …

Two Damaged Trees Needed to Come Down http://blank-cd-r-business-card.com/two-damaged-trees-needed-to-come-down.html Wed, 21 Feb 2018 17:32:26 +0000 http://blank-cd-r-business-card.com/?p=6373 My grandmother has lived in the same house for nearly 60 years. She and my grandfather had purchased it when they were still newlyweds, and my grandfather had fixed it up really nice through the years. When he went to Heaven, she was not able to maintain the upkeep like he had, so we all chipped in to help. We could do most of the work between her children and grandchildren, but some things required a professional to help us. I knew we needed a Nassau County tree removal company when some of the trees around the house were getting too big.

We had thought about having them just cut back, but we feared that two of them were too old and dangerous to keep even if they were cut back. I knew that only a professional would be able to determine that though so I contacted the same tree company we had used a few years ago when a storm caused some tree damage at my house. Not only were they friendly and professional, but they were also inexpensive compared to other tree companies in the area. When I contacted them to come out to look at the trees, they were able to come out on my next day off.

They looked at the two trees, and sadly enough, they agreed. One was beyond any kind of help, and the other one was nearly just as bad. We decided the best course of action would be to just cut them down, and that is what the tree company did. They told me that the house would not be in any danger when the trees would come down, even though they were really close to it. Watching them cut down the trees was interesting to watch, and knowing that they are no longer putting the house in danger made it all worthwhile. They pruned the other trees, and Gram’s house looks amazing once again.…
